Diverse Approaches to the Genre

An classroom exercise meant to stretch the categories we use to cluster, group, and map texts

Purpose of the Exercise

The purpose of this exercise is to:
(1) Consider the diversity of forms that we will encounter in this class.
(2) Identify our scope of practice in this course—the genre that we are working with (e.g., short fiction).

Invitation to the Exercise

Based on the published works you have in front of you, come up with your group’s definition of the genre we will be working on in this class (e.g., short fiction).

Your definition should be inclusive of all the pieces you see in this packet. What characterizes and defines our focus genre?

Discuss how your definition might be different for the words “story,” “flash fiction,” “narrative,” “anecdote,” etc. Add to your paper notes about these terms, or other related words. 

When you've reached a consensus and everyone in your group has had a chance to speak, put your group’s definition of short fiction up on the board.
